Le Manuscrit Cooke, conservé à la British Library sous la cote Additional MS 23198, est le deuxième plus ancien des Anciens Devoirs, après le Poème Regius. Il a été publié à Londres en 1861 par Matthew Cooke, dont il tire son nom, et se date d’environ 1450. Il comprend deux parties : une histoire du métier, qui suit la géométrie et la maçonnerie depuis les fils de Lamech, en passant par la tour de Babel et le Temple de Salomon, jusqu’à Euclide, et un Livre des Devoirs de neuf articles et neuf points pour les maîtres et les compagnons. C’est l’exposé le plus clair de la légende que les maçons du Moyen Âge racontaient sur leur propre origine.
